PostSubject: Rolex Model Numbers -- What do they mean?   Thu Aug 05, 2010 2:43 pm

I saw this over at WL and thought it was some pretty good info on Rolex model nubmers!

What Do The Numbers Mean...
Rolex model numbers currently are either four, five or six digits. The first two or three describes the type of watch. If the watch has five digits, the second from the last describes (some exceptions) the type of bezel and the last describes the material that the watch is made from.

Trevor's example -- 16613 -- 166 Submariner, 1 Finely Engine Turned, 3 Stainless & Yellow Gold -- am I correct?

Type of Watch:
Oyster Perpetual - 10, 140, 142
Airking - 55 & 140
Date - 15 & 150
Datejust - 16 & 162
Daytona Manual Wind - 62
Daytona Cosmograph - 165, 1165
Explorer II - 165
Sea Dweller - 16 & 166
Submariner - 16, 166 & 168
Submariner (no date) - 55 & 140
GMT Master - 16, 65, 167
GMT Master II - 167, 1167
Oysterquartz Datejust - 170
Oysterquartz Day-Date - 190
Day-Date (President) - 65, 66, 18, 180, 182 & 183
Yachtmaster - 166, 686 & 696
Midsize Oyster Perp DJ - 68, 682
Ladies Oyster Perpetual - 67, 671, 672
Ladies Date - 65, 69, 691 & 692
Ladies Datejust - 65, 69, 691 & 692

Type of Bezel...
0 Polished
1 Finely Engine Turned
2 Engine Turned
3 Fluted
4 Hand-Crafted
5 Pyramid
6 Rotating Bezel

Type of Material...
0 Stainless
1 Yellow Gold Filled
2 White Gold Filled
3 Stainless & Yellow Gold
4 Stainless with 18k White Gold
5 Gold Shell
6 Platinum

Mine is a 16613 so you guys can figure it out from there! Also a U series and i saw on another forum it didnt give all the info on the series, stated it was made 1997, when it was really made from 96-99, alot of series overlapped and it really mattered what style you were buying! Here is a list of series and when they were produced!

Reading this chart.

Rolex serial numbers are confusing at best. Rolex has not released their production numbers, or their serial numbers either for what ever reason. Lists have been compiled and are available at various places on the net, and these lists are compiled by noting serial numbers and their first time seen on the market, or by their sales invoices matched to specific serials, and by word of mouth..

This chart is compiled from several lists to give you an approximation of the earliest numbers seen for certain years. Use it to bracket the number you are looking up to give you a best approximation of the production date for that example.

Rolex reached 999,999 in mid-1950's and began over starting with 100,000. These reused numbers are shown in blue. You can verify your manufacture date if there is confusion because during that time they stamped the inside of the case-back with a manufacture date (example, II 55, for the second quarter of 1955)

Wow, this is extremely interesting to learn about !
Many times I see a ton of numbers next to watch
models from every brand out there. It's neat to
see what many of them mean, or stand for in the
case of Rolex !..Thanks again Mark, and Trevor !!!

..Always learning something new !

As stated, sometimes watches are made but not sold until years later. My Sub LV is brand new to the store a few months ago and is a V serial number. My guess is the recession has backed up inventories.

As to model numbers, TAG heuer also has a similar system.

W=regular watch
A=automatic
C=chrono

etc.
