What will we see with watches in 2021?

Think that I may have asked the same question last year, or one similar
to it.  But it's a new year, and thought maybe you guys may have more
than a few ideas about this. Or just thoughts possibly. Maybe it's a new
trend that we will see, or one that might continue. Maybe it's a new direction
the industry might be going in. Or an old one even. What do you think we
will see? Or better yet, what would you like to see?

Who knows what we will see, the trends I see have been back to smaller watches (36mm-38mm for guys) and less of the huge ones, more metal g-shocks, more vintage inspired pieces. Even Rolex produced some new colors in 2020. I really don't like huge watches, I think I am done with Gshocks I have enough, and personally I would like to see a totally new design from Rolex (but I won't be able to buy it unless I sell huge chunks of my collection.

I think the explosion in vintage inspired watches continues, I think this has also inspired a spike in actual vintage watches with any high end swiss pieces exploding in value. Vintage or discontinued Rolex, Omega, Breitling and other Swiss watches have gone up 3x-4x in just the past year or so. People are no longer waiting to buy high end pieces if they have the money to do it.

Personally I think the release of watches in 36mm-38mm sucks. I made a promise not to buy NEW watches less than 40mm, many years ago. I broke that promise with the Timex throwbacks this year, they are small but OK. As I have big wrists, I like 40-45mm with 42-43mm being perfect.

This year also saw a bunch or uninspired "me too" sub homages that were nothing special, many of these were from respected brands. I hope creativity in the establishment comes back. Creativity was high in the micro brands with many unique and beautiful and affordable pieces hitting the street. This I want to continue.

Who knows what's coming? In a way who cares....I have some great watches I really still need to wear more to fully appreciate. SO if nothing new comes out I will be OK.

Holy cow, Gary, you hit it out of the park ! I love the last point
you made about not caring about what's coming. Because you have so many
watches you want to enjoy in your collection. That is so cool sir, not to mention
so true. Even I feel like that with my much smaller collection Gary.

I honestly am on the same page in most respects it seems. I mean the vintage
inspired trend seems to only be getting more vast, and popular. So that has to
keep going, which is awesome to me. It seems every week, or at least every
month we see a new vintage, or heritage type watch from one of the brands
right?! ..Honestly can't get enough of just seeing it, even though I don't end
up buying the watches.  

I'm excited to see what all of the brands have up their sleeves.   I'd like to
especially see some of the brands that haven't been doing too much vintage,
or heritage stuff do more, or do it for the first time. ..For example, Movado
sir. That vintage beauty you were a few days ago was a real reminder of
how Movado used to be. Imagine if they started going in heritage mode?!
Even Tissot can kick it up multiple levels heritage wise imho. Not that their
new Heritage 1973 models aren't great. But they have an amazing amount
of history, and watch models they could do, or even update. Just the various
old Navigator models come to mind for instance. ..Would basically like to
see every brand trying their hand at the vintage thing sir.

However, we also definitely need the creativity, and imagination of many
of the watch companies both big, and small to get supercharged. There
are basically countless case, and dial designs, and styles we just don't
see done anymore today. Plus there are an infinite amount of new ideas
that could be introduced in the watch industry that would energize,
and inspire right sir?! Both the hobby, and watch fans deserve more,
you're right.

There needs to be a balance actually I think. One where we see the
best of the past, and the present, and both old, and brand new ideas.

So it would seem we are basically on the same page Gary.

I think the only thing we may disagree on is the case size thing.
Honestly love all types, and sizes of watches. But have realized that
my wrist was barely medium sized years back, and now has shrunk
even more. To the point where those 36mm-38mm don't seem so
bad to me anymore.
