ETA 2824-2 help. Empty
PostSubject: ETA 2824-2 help.   ETA 2824-2 help. Icon_minitimeFri Jan 29, 2010 2:07 am

I am finding differing information regarding this movement. Some sites claim it runs anywhere from 21,600 bhp to 28,800. I thought a specific movement runs at a specific bph. I always thought that the 2824-2 was at 28,800. Do the bph vary or are they static on this movement?

Don,

The modern 2824-2 is a 28.8 beat watch. When in doubt about an ETA movement go to the ETA website and read their documents. The Technical Specs and other information are generally available on current movements.

The 2824-2 is a part of their MECALINE range of movements

So I gather when a guy has a watch that should be at 28,800 and it's put on a timing machine and registers 21,800 we have a problem.

Yup. Now, I believe that there are older 2824 movements that are not 2824-2 that were 17 or 21 Jewel that ran at 21.8 but they would be 20+ years old if memory serves.

Ya, that's what I have read but this is on my Steinhart Triton. These are incorrect readings for the movement that's in the watch.

I posted this in WUS as well and one member said that he had the same thing happen with a 2824-2 which had to be overhauled. The 2 watchmakers I took it to said that it is possible that a lubrication and a cleaning of the escapement most likely will fix the problem. The first guy said it's behaving as though the escapement is gummed up but I got basically the same reply from both watchmakers.

Yes,
The issue is not so much the movement running at 21,600 bph,
but the movement not running at the proper 28,800 bph.

Most newer timing machines read the rate of the watch and then assume
the beat rate base on the rate read. If the watch is running abnormally
slow, the machine may assume the watch is a 21,600 bph movement running
fast, instead of a 28,800 bph movement running slow. (from Lysanderxiii)

Sorry Don, that sucks in a new watch. I'm sure, with 2 watchmakers looking at it, that you are certain that its a 2824-2 and not some other movement of that diameter?

Everything I read states that the Steinhart Triton has the 2824-2 movement. Hess treats me good so I'm sure that the cost will be minimal.
