Millions (and I mean millions) of sites are being hit with this.
Time Warner cable is literally shutting down millions of people's internet accounts because their computers are infected and they don't even know about it.
The people that run/own the forum software I use for Freeks sent out a big big mass email to all users about how bad this is and how hard it is hitting many sites across the internet, INCLUDING major company's sites.
Here is Time Warners site for what to TRY to do -
http://twccarolinas-security.com/One of my friend's computers got hit about 4 weeks ago. I TRIED to help him. TRIED being the key word because the new viruses are so nasty that they are almost impossible to get off your computer once they are there.
The rep I spoke to at Time Warner Cable Internet Security Department (since that was my friend's internet provider and they had shut down his internet account after they noticed massive amounts of spam being sent from his IP without him ever knowing about it) said that this is/was the worst attack they had ever seen. We ended up completely reformating his computer to get rid of the "root-kit" virus he had. You get one of those you are in big big trouble.
Here is what I do daily/weekly to keep my computer and sites clean. i do all of this because I am regularly logging into about 20 different websites we run or manage and it is to dangerous to take a chace.
I use the following and it seems to be working
1) Paid version of AVG, updates multiple times a day, run automatically twice a day - full deep scan
2) Malwarebytes, updated daily, run every other day
3) a-squared, updated daily, run every other day
4) Trojan Remover 6.8.1 - download evaluation version at
http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html5) Prevx - free version -
http://www.prevx.com/The last 2 are both ones that the Dell rep I spoke to suggested using. I currently update and run them daily.
6) Lastly I also use CCleaner to completely remove all temp files regularly.
I know this seems like a lot BUT I saw how bad my friend's system was infected.
So in my mind, no amount of efforts is to much, especially when you
consider that I personally spoke to Dell's main security guys, Time
Warner's virus team, and the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy - ALL SAID the
virus people are faster and better then any of the programs mentioned
above and are coming out with new stuff faster then the programs above
can update themselves. Since the programs above are also COMPETING to
be the best and updating at different speeds, it is important to run
them all, or some combination of each. One might catch something the
other does not.
