Indulgences

An indulgence, in Catholic theology, is the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due for transgressions which have already been forgiven. The indulgence is granted by the church after the person has confessed and received absolution. The belief is that indulgences draw on the Treasure House of Merit accumulated by Jesus' sacrifice and the virtues and penances of the saints. They are granted for specific good works and prayers.

Indulgences replaced the severe penances of the early Church. More exactly, they replaced the shortening of those penances that was allowed at the intercession of those imprisoned and those awaiting martyrdom for the faith.

Abuses in granting indulgences were a major point of contention when Martin Luther initiated the Protestant Reformation (1517).

Does anyone know if the church still sells indulgences.

To my knowledge, the practice has been abolished, quite some time ago.

OTO, I sold a BOSE system to a Catholic church and the benefactor admitted he rarely attended any more so maybe the word hasn't gotten out yet...

The head priest at a certain church was out for the day, so he asked the deacon to do confession for him. The deacon agrees, and the first person that comes says, "Forgive me, for I just gave a guy a blow job."

He says, "You have sinned." Then he looks at the sheet on the wall that had punishments for certain sins on it, but blow job was not on there, so he went out to ask one of the altar boys what he usually gives for a blow job.

The altar boy answered, "Oh, about five dollars."

Sins are tricky things. Thought buying an indulgence might be necssary.
