Subject: Need some 2893-2 help... Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:06 pm
My Steinhard GMT is keeping great time but the GMT hand seems to be about a half an hour behind. It is a JUMPING hand when you set it and not a "smooth moving" hand. As I type this, about 5pm eastern so the gmt time should be on the dot at 21 hours, but instead it between 20 and 21. Based on watching the watch run through out the day, at 5:30pm it will be right on 21 (which is a half hour slow right?)
HELP!

For the GMT hand
1 O'clock is .5 to the 1 2 O'clock is at the 1 3 O'clock is at 1:30 4 O'clock is at the 2
17:00 should be at the 8:30 mark. So 17:30 would be at the 8:45 mark on the dial and 18:00 would be at the 9:00 mark on the dial

Thanks Robert...
It's a hard watch to set because with the crown pulled out to the first position, it moves the GMT hand, but NOT in a SMOOTH fashion, it moves in hour JUMPS. THEN when you pull the crown out to the 2nd position, this moves the hour hand and THEN then GMT hand moves smoothly accordingly. So it SEEMS (and this may bear out to be true or not) the best way to set the GMT hand is on the HALF HOUR and not dead on at say 5, 6, or 7 o'clock.
Maybe that is why the movement in the book is labeled as "ETA 2893-2, Automatik 11 1/2"?

One hint is to set the time to the hour and then go and set the GMT, that way the GMT should be hitting either the hour or half when you are done with setting it. Just focus on setting it the right # of hours ahead (if you are doing GMT its 5 right now for ET). Its 5:41pm ET now so its 10:41pm GMT right now.

I dont recal if it was Steinhart but there was a brand where the GMT hand did not stay in sync with the time hands. In other words, it may have been perfect staright up at 12:00 but as you turned the hands to 6:00 the GMT hand didnt point to 6 on the outer bezel. Some kind of gear problem as it went around the dial.

I thought Eastern time was GMT -4, it's -5?

GMT for EST is -5
Local Time Subtract from UTC: Atlantic Standard Four hours Atlantic Daylight Three hours Eastern Standard Five hours Eastern Daylight Four hours Central Standard Six hours Central Daylight Five hours Mountain Standard Seven hours Mountain Daylight Six hours Pacific Standard Eight hours Pacific Daylight Seven hours Alaskan Standard Nine hours Alaskan Daylight Eight hours Hawaiian Standard Ten hours
If you are located in the United States, and want to convert from GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or UTC (Universal Time Coordinate) to your local time then use the following table.
From the last Sunday in October through the last Saturday in March standard time is noted as Central Standard Time (CST), (EST), (MST) or (PST).
From the last Sunday in March through the Last Saturday in October daylight savings time is noted as Central Daylight Time (CDT), (EDT), (MDT) or (PDT) which is one hour added to standard time.
To convert GMT to local time, simply subtract 6 hours off the GMT to get CST, and subtract 5 hours off the GMT to get CDT. Your answer will be in a form of a 24 hour clock which is equivalent to what the military uses. For example, if you want to convert 20:00 GMT which is often written as 20Z to CST, you would subtract 6 hours off and end up with 14:00 hours CST. Since this is in the form of a 24 hour clock you would subtract 12 hours to get 2:00 PM CST.

I think the hand needs to be removed and reset in the proper postion. Just as sometimes hour and minute hands get knocked off their normal position, it seems this has occurred to your GMT hand.
Its a very simple fix but requires opening the watch.

Here is a pic of what I mean...
...look where the GMT hand is at 8 o'clock, it should be on 24.

It's actually offset from your main hour hand by 3:30 because 8pm (main hand) is actually 20:00 on the 24 hour scale. But you are right it appears to be .5 off from the hour mark for your hour hand. Is it a Jump hand (when you move the crown it goes in whole hour increments) or is it continuous (moves smoothly like the hour hand)? My Bernhardt is continuous so I can set it to anything at all. The 2893-2 instructions (which is what Steinhart indicates is in your watch) say:
Setting the Time The Worldiver has a screw down crown for water resistance and must be unscrewed before you can wind or adjust the hands. When the crown is unscrewed it pops into position 1. To set the time, pull the Crown(7) all the way into position 3 (2 clicks) and turn it clockwise to change the time. A second time zone can be selected by means of the GMT Hand(6) which completes one revolution in 24-hours.
Setting the Date and 24-Hour Hand Do not set the date or 24-hour hand of your watch between 8 pm and 2 am. This will seriously damage the watch, and such damage is not covered under the warranty. Pull the Crown(7) out into position 2 (the rst click) and turn it counter clockwise to change the date. To change the GMT hand, turn the crown clockwise and rotate the hand until you have reached your desired time indication.
A tip for resetting GMT to your local time Pull the crown all the way out to the time setting position. Turn counter clockwise past midnight and stop at 3:00a.m. Then push the crown into the GMT/date setting position and rotate the GMT hand until it is also at 3:00a.m. then set the date. Pull the crown all the way out again and set the time and the GMT hand will be in sync with local time.

Man oh man, these GMT's can evidently be a little tricky once in a while ! ..Have never had a movement like this one, but the info along with videos are REALLY helpful ! ..I hope that it starts working correctly, so the watch doesn't have to be fixed, or sent back to Steinhart !

Yes, it JUMPS in hours so there is no way to put it exactly where you like...
...guess I should have researched the watch more...grrrrrrrrrr.
I followed the last step as well and it is STILL .5 off...
Sent an email to Steinhart with picture, let's see what they say...

Alan, the hour hand appears to be slight off as well (not exactly at 8:00). Unless it's the angle of the shot.

Looks like this one is acting correctly:
It's past 3:30 and looks like the GMT is just past the midway point between 14 and 15...

Man I hate when that happens. Glad you're on track for recovery.
BTW that strap looks like a Steinhart copy. You may want to consider upgrading to the source. As I mentioned I have the tan sueded version.
