I found this flow chart while poking around the web. It shows the origination of the Seiko divers with the 6217-8000 series diver and goes through the professional divers (MM) and the 150m divers through the 6306/6309. This site has some pretty nice pictures of each Seiko model as well as other helpful information ---->>>> Molle Watch ~~ http://mollewatch.webgain.se/information/index.xhtm?webgainGroupId=13044
.
The first divers watch from Seiko, 6217-800x a.k.a. 62MAS, emerged in 1965. Since then there has been a gazillion of different models using all kinds of movements (auto, quartz, kinetic, kinetic direct drive, solar, spring drive) and spanning from entry level models to Professional ones.
The family tree of Seiko Divers is scattered, to say the least, but the below picture from Harry Teicher, Denmark puts the light on the, IMHO, most interesting ones.

That's one of the touchstones of Seiko Dive watch WISdom. The folks at SCWF are working on updating all that material as its badly out of date (the older stuff is great but there have been many developments not covered on that site in the past 4-6 years).

GREAT info and link; lots of great pics and history there. Seiko has consistently proven that MADE IN JAPAN is not a bad thing, giving the Swiss a run for the money!
