May as well post this one also.Got this from a dealer mechanic who used to autocross it.The front left corner was destroyed,so the
price was really good. One deciding factor was the interior was still all original as was the engine, other than the super charger that
was on it.A restoration and a refinish are two totally different things.Considering the rarity of this one,a full restoration was in order.
1st up was the engine.I had to search all over Germany to get the full specs for this car.I found the color for it off a VW.
this is the engine after I finished. Its 100% original, including the paint and the decals.
next up was the body. The left front had taken a hard hit. With the bonnet open,I could see the inner fender was wrinkled.
So it got cut off and took about 2 months to straighten it,weld in new metal and shape it.I didn't use any bondo for this.
all liquid steel and shaped with files.
After I had the body stripped and worked,I applied a 5mm thick layer of polyester/putty cote over the entire body
and broke out the long boards and shaped the car.I lay down a coat of black primer 1st so I can see any high or low spots.
By the time its done, theres very little polyester left. Then it got sealed, then primed, blocked, primed and blocked again.
off to the paint booth for the 1st coats of sealer and basecoat. All looked good so 3 coats of 2k clear was applied.
The next day,I blocked that down with 600 grit, retaped it and added two more coats of clear.I now had a flawless straight paint job.
Completly restored and now belongs to my Dad.He loves it.
