Finally met one in the wild!

Well, the family and I went to the malls today. My wife wanted to get me an iPad. Nice thought. Tried one at the Apple Store - meh. Too heavy, too limited, too much money.

Anyway, I also stopped by the major jewelry store at the high end mall wearing my post-swimming clothes. Got NO attention from the sales people Some guy in his Sunday Church clothes and wearing a Fossil was being talked to heavily by the salesman about the advantages of Rolex. When he asked how much for the one he was being shown and was told "only $4200" I thought I would burst out in laughter at his reaction "For a WATCH!?!"

Anyway, after he left with his kids the saleman finally noticed me (kinda hard as I'm 6-3 and was the only customer in the place). Asked me if I was being allowed to buy a watch for Father's Day and was I interested in Rolex watches. Told him the only one I liked was the GMT II but that I hadn't seen the new bezel in person. His eye . So much fun playing with moron salesmen who haven't learned that THEY have to dress properly but that CUSTOMERS can dress however they like and still buy the stuff they have. Anyway, he looked at my wrist and got another look because I was wearing my Sinn (the hat didn't cue him in so......anyway). He begrudingly took the GMT II out of the case and held it up for me to look. I put my hand out to ask for it and he hesitated. I turned to leave and he offered for me to try it out. Gotta love it. Anyway, VERY nice bezel. Seriously, and you know me - I do not to Rolex at all but that new bezel is really nice. Put my Sinn on the cloth while I tried on the GMT II and he asked me what it was. I told him it was made in Germany by Zin and that they only make about 10000 watches a year for professionals. His attitude changed a bit. Tried to talk me into the watch, showed me the new 41mm models and generally lightened up.

Funny, I went into the JCPenny for an entirely different reason and walked past the Watches (Citizen, Seiko, Bulova, Relic, etc.) and the woman behind the counter said "Sir, is that a Zin you're wearing?" Seriously could have knocked me over with a feather . My first Female WIS in the wild! She was wearing a LE Bulova auto that was made to tie in with a WWII movie a couple of years ago #516/1000. She asked me about the Sinn and was it Ti, I explained Tegimentation to her and she actually seemed interested. Why the F wasn't she selling at the major jewelry store and that schmuck at JCPenny?

I took my first look at the iPad yesterday too.
Definitely cool - but No Flash - Sorry. 1st Gen another reason not to bite.
Looks like a great content consuming device - not a great content creation device.

Being a 300lb Black Guy with Dreadlocks past my Ass - You can imagine what high-end stores think when I walk in.
I live for exposing the contrast to them - usually makes my day.

Female WISs are certainly rare. I've only encountered a couple in my area - always a delightful pleasure.

I can only imagine what the reaction is to you entering the high end store. I learned very early, on my first real job, not to judge customers by their clothing or demeanor. I snubbed this old guy in overalls and clodhopper boots. The manager pushed past me, apologized, and waited on him personally (something I had only seen once or twice prior to that). Later he was very kind to me (I was 15) and explained that the old gentleman had sold all the land that the entire 500 acres of mall, businesses, offices, and other facilities were located on and that he carried enough cash on him to buy anything we had in the store many times over. The manager explained that he was giving me a 2nd chance because I was young but that I would not get a 3rd. Learned that lesson and have tried to live by it since.

Still, greasy hair, cargo pocket shorts, grimy sports shirt, Rayban Wayfarers, and Sinn baseball cap looking at the Rolex and Omega watches.......

Whether she was with me in person or not, I wear my ring.

4200 for a GMTIIC with ceramic bezel? Must be a pre loved watch. Last Sept when I bought mine, MSRP was $7000.00. In any event, sounds like you had a fun day shopping with the family. Any day watch shopping (buying or not) is better than a day at the office!

As for the Ipad. I am waiting also.

No, he wasn't looking at the GMT. I was looking at it and never asked their prices, wouldn't be polite to laugh in the man's face. Plus I thought MSRP on the GMT II is $7k?

Sounds like a GREAT day Doc ! Must have been something
meeting a watch person, or WIS like that. I mean it really doesn't
happen that often, if ever. Like you said, you could have been
knocked over with a feather when it happened, it's THAT rare !
I often wonder why we don't see more watch people out there,
but that must have helped make your day !..That, along with
spending the day with your family must have been fantastic !
..Don't really know too much about the ipad, but it sounds
like you made the right decision waiting. Plus I'm sure there
will be a newer version coming before you know it ! ..

Gotta say I got an iPad and love it beyond belief. It's just amazing especially for web. Perfect for me so I can have if for personal use instead of my work PC. It is killer.

I don't own one yet. But, I remember how great It was when I got my ipod touch 2nd gen. Many nights I just wifi from the bed and read all my great forum stuff. The screen is small but it is still good. I'll wait a year or so till the prices come down some. Apple products are kick @zz!
